Beacon Academy

Beacon Banner

Located within South Elgin High School in District U‑46, the Beacon Academy of Media & Digital Arts is a nationally‑certified magnet program that empowers students with a passion for digital storytelling and media production. Through hands‑on coursework in audio/video production, broadcast journalism, webcasting, and web design, Beacon Academy students gain real‑world skills in videography, editing, sound engineering, and critical media analysis—preparing them for internships, employment, and further study in digital media arts.

Grounded in a curriculum that balances theoretical foundations with practical application, students engage in coursework across five core areas: theoretical foundations, career awareness and preparation, technology, production and programming, and specialized techniques. Hands‑on experiences—working with electronic media tools, television and radio broadcasting—give learners critical insight into how their work influences society, while preparing them for real-world media careers.

Beacon Academy nurtures creative thinkers and effective communicators who understand both the craft and the social impact of modern media. Located on the vibrant campus of South Elgin High (home of the Storm), the academy builds into U‑46’s mission of closing equity gaps and empowering all students for success. Students apply in eighth grade and join a tight‑knit cohort where they receive mentorship, master professional tools, and graduate ready to tell compelling stories in an increasingly digital world.
