Mathematics Philosophy
At South Elgin High School, the Math Department is committed to fostering a learning environment where all students engage in meaningful mathematical discussions and develop a strong command of mathematical language. Our goal is for students to articulate their reasoning, justify their solutions, and critique the thinking of others using precise mathematical vocabulary. Through structured collaboration and guided discourse, students deepen their conceptual understanding and build confidence in problem solving. We emphasize continued practice both in and out of the classroom, encouraging students to reinforce their learning through independent work, collaborative tasks, and real-world applications. Course Sequencing
At South Elgin High School, students embark on a thoughtfully structured math journey aligned with U‑46’s course progression. Beginning in Grade 9, learners typically enroll in Algebra 1, laying the foundation of algebraic techniques and functional reasoning. In Grade 10, the pathway progresses to Geometry, where students explore proofs, spatial reasoning, and geometric constructions. Grade 11 centers on Algebra 2, which deepens algebraic fluency and introduces advanced topics—preparing students for various quantitative pathways. U‑46 provides multiple fourth-year options tailored to student goals: Pre‑Calculus, AP Calculus AB/BC, or AP Statistics. each designed to support STEM, social sciences, or career-focused aspirations.
Additionally, students can select from Transition Math courses—Transition to College Algebra, Technical Math, or Quantitative Literacy & Statistics—which are structured to build essential skills for college or career readiness. Those aiming to earn college credit may choose dual-credit offerings in College Algebra, Statistics, or even Calculus via Elgin Community College, seamlessly integrating high school and college curricula.
